Astaxanthin: The vitamin to prevent visual aging

Astaxanthin is a powerful carotenoid widely found in nature, especially in the sea. It is a red pigment that is common to fish and crustaceans such as salmon, shrimp, lobster and crayfish, whose pink-reddish color is a product of the microalgae they consume, which are rich in this carotenoid.

Although astaxanthin can be synthesized by plants, bacteria, some fungi and green algae, it has been discovered that the microalga H. pluvialis has the highest concentration of this carotenoid, ranging from 4% to 5% of its dry weight.

The amazing chemical properties of astaxanthin derive from its molecular structure, making it the most powerful antioxidant on earth and capable of protecting our bodies against a wide array of diseases.

Astaxanthin supplements are available in capsules, providing easy access to this super-antioxidant that protects the central nervous system, the brain, the eyes and more. In fact, natural astaxanthin is one of the few antioxidants capable of protecting the whole cell, both its water- and fat-soluble parts. It can travel throughout our entire body to protect the cells that make up our organs, muscles and tissues. If you are currently taking an astaxanthin dietary supplement as part of your daily regimen, I recommend a daily intake of 4-6 mg. However, if you are taking astaxanthin due to a serious health condition, it is recommended to increase the daily intake to 12 mg. It is important to note that astaxanthin is a fat-soluble carotenoid, therefore, it works best when taken with food, since fat contributes to its absorption.

Studies that support the benefits of astaxanthin:

  • Research published in the Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology in 2004 has shown that an intake of 4-12 mg of astaxanthin for 28 consecutive days can significantly improve vision and stabilize refraction.
  • In 2006, on the Journal of Clinical Therapeutic Medicine other researchers found that 6 mg of pluvialis astaxanthin a day could decrease the eye fatigue we experience at the end of the workday.
  • It has been observed that in cases of eye diseases that lead to uveitis, astaxanthin blocks the inflammatory cells that cause it. Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science (2003).
  • According to the Chemical Research in Toxicology journal published in 2009, astaxanthin is capable of offering protection against the oxidative stress occurring in the lens as a result of cataract.
  • In addition, as published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology in 2008, a group of researchers have shown that this carotenoid features neuroprotective effect against retinal ganglion cell damage.

Thus, we might consider taking carotenoid supplements such as lutein, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin to improve certain visual abilities and prevent degenerative eye diseases. The intake of these carotenoids should be monitored by a medical professional who can prescribe an adequate dose and keep track of its benefits to your body.
